Cats like the view from the top Print E-mail

I'm always full of admiration for the way cats enjoy the view from the top.   It must be awful for them to be deprived of this pleasure.   Our farmyards are playgrounds for our cats.  I guess that in town, it's garden sheds, outhouses and tall trees that provide the high-rise adventures.   And don't cats indoors just love to get on those bedroom window sills and look down at everybody else!

Kimme is a handsome grey and white old stager, around 17 years we think.   Although he's not the oldest cat in the sanctuary, we have some elderly ladies who beat him by quite a few years.   But Kimme is a lovely character and still surprises us with his adventurous nature.  He's one of those chaps who does his own thing.  He likes to be fussed .... a little bit..... he likes to come in..... when he's ready..... and most of all, he likes to climb.   This roof is one of his favourite spots, it catches the sun so I guess it's really warm on a sunny day.  I wonder if Kimme has a secret dominant nature - it's not often any of the other cats share his fave spot.   They go up there when he comes down!  Maybe it's deference to his senior citizenship.

Kimme came to us a few years ago, along with three other cats, all from the same family.   Kimme was the 'baby' although still old then - they were the treasured pets of an elderly couple who lived inner city and had kept this lovely feline family since kittenhood.  When the old lady passed away her husband told us that it was her dying wish that the cats come to us for the rest of their lives.  We were happy to oblige and these lovely personality plus felines quickly took a place in  our hearts too.

If Kimme misses the passing of his mum and aunties over the years, he doesn't appear to show it and leads a very happy, if somewhat independent life.  This chap is no fawning fuss-pot - he is strong and resourceful, a good eater too.

Which makes me think about the longevity of our cats.  Some seem to go on for much longer than others.  Is it lifestyle?   How we feed them?   Or hereditary?
