News and updates on the sick, the sad and the scared
What happened to the sick Rottweiler?
When a labrador goes on the attack it can be very serious - what will happen to the one brought in because he put a member of the public in hospital - will the authorities say he has to be destroyed?
Will it be last call for the boxer brought in with a huge tumour on his leg?
Where are the puppies? A thin terrier is brought in running with milk.
Will the totally traumatised tiny brindle bitza pull round - 'just a bag of bones' and too scared to eat.
Sick Rottweiler
Bad news first. The words from the vet were that his condition was hopeless, the pain would worsen, so the lovely young rottweiler did have to be put to sleep. It happened as gently as possible and he hopefully didn't know anything about it. Who let him get in this condition and then abandoned him?
Attack dog
We don't know all the circumstances but the labrador brought in by the police had attacked a man and put him in hospital. He seemed fine with us, totally bewildered and obviously looking for his owners. They got in touch with us and told us the dog was a family pet and had never done anything like this before - he was protecting one of the children when it happened. So for a while we were looking after the dog not knowing whether there would be a destruction order placed on him. The family were desperate to get him back and had agreed to muzzle him when he was out to make sure it could never happen again. It's hard for dogs to understand when we don't want them to protect us - after all, it's their nature, so we felt a good deal of sympathy for the dog and the owners. It was touch and go but in the end the dog was allowed to go back home - the family were overjoyed and so was he.
Life or death for the boxer with the tumour
A most soulful looking boxer dog, around middle age, was brought in as a stray this week, in good condition apart from a huge tumour on his leg. The lump is as big as an orange and although it doesn't appear to hurt him, it must be very uncomfortable and there's a risk of infection if he knocks it. The vet has had a quick look at it already and is going to check for malignancy and whether it can be removed on Monday next. Watch this space.
Where are the puppies?
A great little staffi x terrier led us quite a dance when we went to pick her up after she'd been handed in as a stray. Quick as lightning she slipped her collar and was off - disappearing in the direction of the nearest Asda! Within a couple of hours she'd been rounded up again and this time we made sure she couldn't escape. Why was she so keen to run off? It wasn't hard to figure out - this little lady must have felt desperate as she'd obviously just whelped and was running with milk. Poor little girl. Looks like someone has destroyed the pups and dumped the dog. She's pining - and pacing and wanting to go find her babies. More news on her soon.
Emaciated cruelty case
One of the prettiest little dogs we've had in for a long time and also one of the most severely malnourished - this little stripey bitza (staffi x terrier?) is terrified and every bone in her body stands out. She came in as a stray so we don't know what happened to her or where she's been. Wrapping her up in comfort blankets and hand feeding her is the only hope. So far she's too scared and weak to move.
