It's Crufts Dog Show this week at the NEC Birmingham (8-11 March) and there will be four new breeds of dog on show for the first time.
The Longhaired Pointer, the Pyrenean Sheepdog, the Japanese Inu and the Coton de Tulear. It's interesting to see these new breeds and hopefully will make people conscious of what dog breeding is all about - it's man-made selection of the canine species in order to preserve particular qualities.
There've been a lot of fixed ideas in the past - remember when all the white Alsatians were routinely put down at birth? Fortunately this doesn't happen now - or does it? If you hear of this please let us know.
This is a picture of Storm, a white Alsatian we rescued last year. She's a wonderful dog and a perfect companion for the lady who adopted her. Storm came back to see us at a recent yard sale.
We see lots of new breeds at the sanctuary - Labradoodles (labradors x poodles)especially are becoming very popular. We have our own special breeds too - we call them Chesterfield Bitzas. Alright then, bits of this, bits of that. It's a fact that x bred dogs, particulary first crosses, are hardy, intelligent and great characters.
