Sunshine weekend brings in the strays

alt Staffi strays

There is always a staffi in every batch of stray dogs brought in.   The one this weekend is a female, very fussy and lively.  Why do staffis get abandoned more than any other breed?   They are usually lovely characters, faithfull and placid with people - of course they can be a little bit argumentative with other dogs!

Over the last few days we have also taken in a stripey lurcher, a terrier youngster (about six months old) and a dainty border terrier x Jack Russell.   Anyone looking for any of these guys?  They are definitely looking for someone - is it you?   Please get in touch if you have lost a dog.   They are confused, bewildered and usually hungry when they arrive.   A nice welcome helps to reassure but at first all the lost dogs want to do is - get back home.

We check for a microchip, assess health and condition and settle them in.  For the first 10 days they are on the lost dog register at the local Council and if you want to claim a dog, you need to go there first and pay a fee.  They'll give you a release form and then you can come and collect your dog from us.   Except for weekends, when the Council Offices are closed, we are unable to give your dog back without this important bit of paper.  During weekends we are authorised to release the dog on proof of ownership and payment of the fine, for which we will give you a receipt.

What about the dogs who aren't claimed?   They stay here with us.   This is a picture of Sunny who came to us ten years ago.   A staffi x of uncertain lineage and temperament, the sanctuary is her home.  Sunny loves it here, she wouldn't leave if you gave her the chance!
