Dogs really can smile Print E-mail

Cooper is happy to be home!

Did you doubt that a dog could smile?    Just one look at this 'happy ending' and there is no disputing it.    When a bedraggled  staffi was brought in to the sanctuary as a stray, we hoped, as we always do, that he would be claimed.

The dog was thin and exhausted and this Prison Break character looked as though he'd been on the run for days.     Everything about him was sad. He was miserable, lethargic and perpetually looking around for someone who wasn't there.    We tried our best to cheer him up but this dog was missing his folks big style.

So many staffordshire bull terriers are brought in to us that we know they are the most popular breed in this area.    For a while anyway, until they do something wrong and then get thrown out.    But this tan and white gent had no hang ups that we could see, he was clean, polite, friendly but ....... always on the lookout - for someone else.     We fed him, gave him a shampoo and set, walked him up the fields, gave him lots of fuss -  but he still wasn't really settling.

What we didn't know was that his owners were frantic with worry and doing everything they could to trace him.  He'd been stolen from a secure garden, the children were pining for him and the whole family was desperate to get him back.

Checking the microchip works some of the time but not always.   For some reason Cooper's didn't show up.   Our policy is not to put any healthy dog to sleep but before we took on the stray dog rescue many of the dogs were destroyed if they weren't claimed by the seventh day.   Lucky for Cooper and all our other rescues that we have a non-destruction policy and everything we do is focused on happy endings.

When we had a phone call telling us that a much loved tan and white staffi had gone missing - we really hoped that this was the one.   Bingo!  When his owners came to fetch him, it was impossible to tell who was most overwhelmed with emotion.    This sad, lethargic fellow started leaping about in wild excitement at seeing his people again.   'Does he recognise you?   You bet!' And they were just as pleased to see him.  This is the thank you email they sent us - just look at those smiling faces!  Thanks so much to these lovely people for sharing this with us - what a wonderful happy ending - it's what makes all the hard work worthwhile.

HI,
WE ARE SENDING THIS EMAIL TO SAY A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS WHO HELPED TO CARE FOR COOPER DURING HIS STAY WITH YOU LAST WEEK.
ATTATCHED IS A PIC OF HIM BACK HOME WITH HIS GIRLS.   WE THOUGHT YOU COULD DISPLAY IT AS AN HAPPY ENDING BECAUSE WITHOUT YOU AND THE DOG WARDENS AT AMBER VALLEY WE MIGHT NEVER HAVE SEEN HIM AGAIN.
SO THANK YOU.
