Finding a stray dog
Happy Tails
Written by Daphne

This dog was loose on the big roundabout near Meadowhall.  The traffic was busy and it was a miracle he wasn't knocked down.   Cars stopped and people jumped out.  He was frightened but friendly and was quickly caught.   What next?   A lady had picked him up.    What do I do with him?   Who does he belong to?   Where shall I take him?    Since April this year the process for dealing with stray dogs has changed.   'Shall I take him to the police?'   It's not quite as simple as that anymore ......

Home alone dog - what to do in a petcare crisis
Pet Advice Guides
Written by Daphne

When Toby's owner broke his hip in a fall and was rushed off to hospital, the sudden emergency didn't, at first, take account of who would look after his dog.    Toby was left in a shed in the back garden but the neighbours were all out at work and there were no close relatives in the area.

Lost Female Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Lost Dogs
Written by Pet Samaritans

Have you seen this dog???

Lost Dog

This female staffordshire bull terrier aged 10 months was reported as a lost dog recently. Her name is Ruby. She is black and dark brown, the brown in her looks a bit brindled, she has a white patch on her neck and a small white bit on her chest. She is a smooth haired staffy.

She went missing on Thursday the 11th at about 4pm from  Holland Rd. Old Whittington Chesterfield. She is a very friendly dog (too friendly) so there is a good chance she went up to someone when she got out of out garden. She had got out of her collar so she wouldn’t of been wearing the collar at the time.

You can contact the owner directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

or the Pet Samaritans on 01246 456177 if you have any information.

Stray dogs
Pets
Written by Daphne

This lucky chap came in as a stray, he spent ten days in kennels, wasn't claimed but was handed over to us and then we found him a super home.  For many of the other strays out there life isn't so kind.   The policy regarding abandoned and straying dogs changed this month.  The police are no longer responsible for taking them in.   So what happens to the dogs that are lost, thrown out, abandoned or knocked down by a car?   It's now down to each Borough Council to take care of them.  How does that happen?  And where do the dogs go?

Animal Welfare

The Pet Samaritans are dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and suffering. Through our animal campaigns, we aim to make sure the Animal Welfare act is complied with. British MP Richard Martin in 1822 pushed a bill through Parliament offering protection from cruelty to cattle, horses and sheep earning himself the nickname Humanity Dick. The five freedoms of animal welfare are freedom from thrist, hunger and malnutrition, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress. We campaign for animal welfare throughtout the UK and Europe. This website aims to provide advice and tips for the proper care of animals and pets to owners and the general public at large.

Dog Adoptions

One of the main resources of the sanctuary is devoted to abandoned dogs. We take in all the strays and dumped dogs as part of our derbyshire dog adoption service. Every week we receive upto 20 dogs for adoption and desperately need to find them suitable homes. Please visit our pet and dog adoption pages for more information about how you can get involved with the Pet Samaritans and rehome a dog.

Lost Pets

With our close ties with local authorities, dog wardens and the police, our lost pets service provides a valuable resource to recover your pet. Place your advert for your lost pet on the Pet Samaritans website and reach thousands of people who might just have information that can help recover your pet.
